『鯰尾藤四郎』は、「天下三作」と称される名工のひとり、粟田口吉光によって打たれた名刀です。
粟田口派の中でもとくに優れた技量を持つ吉光は、短刀の名手として知られ、その作品はいずれも美術的価値の高いものばかり。本作もそのひとつとされています。
もとは長巻として作られた本刀は、後に刀へと姿を変えた長巻直し造りの脇差であり、通常の鎬造りとは異なる、流麗で独特な造形が魅力です。
