I don't think there is a clear definition yet, so in my opinion, the so-called continental painting includes "the technique of painting by saturation and hue rather than luminance".
Now that it is possible to control the brightness with a technique that was used by Impressionist painters, Matisse, and Van Gogh, with an index close to human vision, I think there is no reason not to make use of it.
What you can do with this technique is to add glamour and lightness to the picture while increasing the amount of information at once.
If you try to control the brightness alone, the screen tends to be heavy, but it greatly expands the room for drawing surface and texture information while suppressing it.
What I pay attention to when using it is
- Use complementary or opposite colors for vibrancy and contrast
- Fewer colors (2~4 colors)
- Actively use luminance to express light
- Use to paint different surfaces as much as possible

無彩色の下地には色が付かないのでご注意ください。
はっきりした定義はまだないと思いますので私見ですが、いわゆる大陸塗りとは「輝度ではなく彩度・色相で塗り分ける技法」が含まれていると考えています。
印象派の画家やマティスやゴッホも使っていた技法で、人の視覚に近い指標で輝度がコントロールできるようになった今、これを活用しない手はないと思います。
この技法でなにができるかというと、絵に華やかさ・軽やかさを与えつつ、情報量が一気に増やせます。
輝度だけでコントロールしようとすると画面が重たくなりがちですが、それを抑えながら面や質感の情報を描きこむ余地が大幅に広がります。
私が使うときに気をつけていることは
- 補色や反対色を使って、鮮やかさやコントラストを出す
- 色数は少なめに(2～4色)
- 光の表現には積極的に輝度を使う
- なるべく面を塗り分けるために使う
という感じですが、気持ちよく好きに大胆に使っていただければと思います！
