This texture is meant to be set on overlay, but you can use it other way.
Make sure you have main color black and white and white as secondary with first color selected.
You can change them to color it or use autoaction to color it like below. Also any gradient can work. You can get results like this (border brush is not going in set, but it available in my embroidery set)
