This is the recommended way to use the smudge brush.
1. Base color
2. Add scondary color
3. Smudge in linear motion (making lines with the brush)
4. Smudge the center of the mixing in circular motions

I've tried to make the best possible settings for this brush but my knkowledge about brush making aren't too extensive at the moment. Feel free to tweek with the settings.
