■A famous sword that wears history
"Beard-kiri" is a famous sword that has been handed down as a treasure to the Minamoto clan, the master of the samurai family. It is famous for the anecdote that Watanabe Tsuna, one of the legendary Four Heavenly Kings of Yorimitsu, used a beard cut to slash the arm of a demon on the Ichijo Return Bridge.
When he had the sinner's head slashed, even his beard was slashed, hence the name.

■歴史を纏う名刀
『髭切』は、武家の棟梁である源氏に重宝として伝わる名刀です。伝説に名高い頼光四天王の一人、渡辺綱が髭切を用いて一条戻橋で鬼の腕を斬った逸話が有名です。
罪人の首を斬らせたところ、髭まで斬れたことから、この名がつきました。
その後、鬼丸、獅子ノ子、友切と名を改めてきましたが、源義朝が武運に恵まれぬ事を嘆くと、八幡大菩薩によるお告げがあり、友切という名により刀の力が弱まったことを知らされます。源義朝はこれを受けて髭切と名前を戻したと伝えられています。
平家の宝刀である小烏丸などと並び、武家に伝わる名刀として、髭切は古来より物語においても重要視されてきました。
源頼朝の愛刀髭切、源義経の愛刀膝丸。この二振りは、正に源氏の象徴たる刀と言えるでしょう。
天下人の愛刀にふさわしい絢爛な兵庫鎖太刀拵、髭切は、創作において華やかな品格をもたらします。
日本が誇る美術品としても、その歴史的意義からも日本刀文化に欠かせない一振りです。
