Try playing around with blending modes using these patterns. I usually place the colour on top of the pattern and then use a blending mode on the pattern, but you could experiment with it yourself to find the effect you want.
Some examples:
I used a block of purple colour with various blending modes placed on top of the normal mode pattern. For these examples I used hard light, vivid light, screen, multiply, and colour burn.
