『源清麿』は、新々刀期の天才として名高い名工、源清麿によって打たれた名刀です。
波瀾万丈な人生を送ったことで有名な源清麿ですが、その腕前は名高く、江戸三作として称され、その作品は番付においても最上作とされています。
源清麿の刀は、現代に置いても非常に高い人気があり、同時期の刀工でも一つ抜けた評価をされることが多く、四谷正宗とも呼ばれるほどの名声は、源清麿の作品が優れていることの証左と言えるでしょう。
本作は嘉永の頃に打たれた作品であり、身幅広く、元幅との差が殆どない立派な姿をしています。清麿の作品には、更に大きな切っ先のイメージを持つ人も多いでしょうが、本作は清麿らしい迫力を持ちつつも、どのような場面にも使いやすい姿の刀となっております。
新撰組局長の近藤勇が愛用していた虎徹の正体は源清麿だったという説もありますが、そのような話が生まれるほどに当時から高名だったのでしょう。特に幕末の新撰組が活躍した時期であれば、源清麿を所持していても不思議ではありません。幕末を描く際に本作を活用するのも一興かと思われます。
