One of the furnishings of the Heian period is "Kawai (Kiosoku)". I think that it can use until the early modern times not limited to the Heian period. 平安時代の調度品の一つ、「脇息（きょうそく）」です。平安時代に限らず、近世まで使えるかと思います。
