A very basic 7-value palette for values blocking/planning.

A very basic 7-value palette, useful for blocking out and planning values. Particularly useful for grayscale-to-color workflows.

Recommended usage:
  1. Starting with just the middle three values, plan out your entire piece’s values;
  2. Once those are in place, expand to five values. Use the new shades to refine your existing values;
  3. Once these are in place, either paint on new layers using these as reference or start separating out the value blocks to apply gradient maps individually.
Why just five values? From “Artists’ Master Series: Color & Light”: “…by the time we expand the range to five values, we have all of the information we need. Beyond that, all of the modeling present in the final painting can just be viewed as transitions between these broader value groups."
