It is a pose used when trying to prevent something threatening or attacking from the front with all your might.
Examples include:
・ When you are joking, you can "pass through" in play.
・When children (rather weak) resist adults (rather strong)
・ To buy time when letting someone behind you escape, decoy
・ In a pinch of desperation, protect something from the attack in front
… Rather than guarding with this, I think it is easy to use for the so-called "just before being hit" position, where you want to show off your will to say "I won't let you through!", or when you try to stop something behind you (such as a person) from something that you can never prevent.
威嚇、もしくは前方から襲い来るものを、身を挺し全力で防ごうとするときに使うポーズです。
例としては
・ふざけている時、遊びの中での“通せんぼ”
・子供など（どちらかと言えば弱者）が、大人など（どちらかと言えば強者）に抵抗する時
・後ろにいる誰かを逃がす時の時間稼ぎ、囮
・絶体絶命のピンチに、前方の攻撃から何かをかばう
…等々、これでガードすると言うよりは、『通さないぞ！』と言う意志を誇示する場合や、もしくは絶対に防ぎきれない様なものから背後にあるもの（人物など）を守るために何とか止めようとする、いわゆる“やられる直前”の体勢に使いやすいかと思います。
