The brush is sensitive to pressure. Pressure effects brush size and amount of paint.
If you turn off the "Color Mixing", you will get a illumination effect where you can use the brush to make rough patches of gras/foliage.
You can turn color mixing on and off by checking this box.
If the color mixing is on, you will have a brush that blends and paints over smoothly to give that smooth bush shading. Here is how I do it:
