Color is controlled by pressure, in the image below, I create my flame and duplicate the layer, blurring the duplicate. The non blurred layer is set to overlay, while the blurred us set to (Add) Glow. Then I use the ember brush!
You can also duplicate the overlay layer and fiddle with settings and opacity if the edge isn't clear enough for your liking ~
