His eyes dip for the briefest moment as he takes in the slinky black dress she’s wearing—his favorite on her, she knows, even after all these years. Something flashes in his eyes then, and the intensity of it makes her cross her arms like she’s trying to keep her heart from thudding out of her chest. She puts a foot upon her own wall, the stiletto digging into the brick giving her a sense of grounding. Finally, he breaks the tense silence with a raspy voice. "Still playing dress-up to impress, I see.” The feelings wreaking havoc in her chest make her response sharp. "Better than playing pretend in a marriage that was never real.”
