Photo Series of Insects -- Number 4 -- Praying Mantis
Photo Praying Mantis on parked car tire.
Remains of a mantis egg case is stuck in the tread.
The Praying Mantis is seen throughout Texas in areas with abundant food source.
Mantis vary in color: brown, green, and tan depending on age and species.
Males and females are easily distinguished.
Males have a straight narrow abdomen with long wings.
Females have thick abdomens and short wings.
They both have long, thick forelegs that they hold as in prayer.
These legs have sharp spikes that hold their prey while the mantis eats.
The mantis are considered a beneficial insect because they feed on harmful insects.
The mantis often plays the hero against a verity of villains.
Egg cases of common Texas Mantis species are encased in a frothy material that
hardens into a foam-like rectangular shape, usually about 1 inch long and 3/8 inch in diameter.
These cases hold dozens of eggs.
