Photo Series of Insects -- Number 3 -- Texas Banded Garden Spider
built on the corner of a pickup truck bed.
The spider species Argiope trifasciata, commonly known as Banded Garden Spider
or Orb-weaver because they spin circular webs,
are most often seen outdoors in October.
These large arachnids are seen in Australia, Canada, Cyprus, Israel, Mexico,
Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Spain, United States.
Unlike most spiders, orb weavers have three claws on each foot
which enable them to spin more complex webs.
The top of the females’ abdomens are stripped black and bright yellow.
Their legs are reddish brown at the base and black near the ends.
Males are smaller with more brown legs and less yellow.
Argiope spiders are not aggressive and other than defense,
they do not attack animals; they may bite if grabbed.
